my 2 cents on 50

I personally am not against reservation but against the misuse of reservation. To me 22.5% for SC/ST is pretty fine, that most of them lack behind in their stay at IITK is a totally different issue. Moresoever we have been living with this truth for long and it doesnt pinch. But even 1% of reservation for OBC beats me.

We dont have to be ultra observant to know that these so called backward classes are some of the financially strongest ones. Yadavs rule UP and Bihar and just to get votes they have been awarded OBC status. And its not the recent past but ever since the time when caste system was formed, remember Mahabharat and Sree Krishna. Few years back Ajit Singh (am ashamed to say that such a chamelon was a product of IITs) got the Jats listed in this OBC list. These Jats are the land owners, the richest people in western UP and by far the most dominant one. Being from UP I dont know much about other states but heard on NDTV that Baniyas are also listed in Bihar. For heaven's sake baniyas!!!!!!!!!!!!! dont we know over whelming population of Gupta's and Agrawal's in IIT, why would any one like to reserve seats for them???

For whatever I know of castes and IITs I can tell that some castes do promote education (especially JEE) more than others. Like I've mentioned before Baniyas are easily the front runners in IITK, next come Kayasthas and Brahmins while Thakurs are far far behind. Now no one can argue that Thakurs are so poor that they cant get their children in a coaching institute and a decent school. It just happened to be that the environment around them is such that they dont prefer to slog over this. There is no way a law can improve this environment. Same I believe can be said for some other castes, some of whom might belong to "OBCs".

Now coming to an even more critical issue, this reservation will lead to seggregriation in the hostels. I am sorry to say but there were wings in IITK who were constitued by the people coming from the SC/ST background. There have been cases of skirmishes between the people from these wings and the rest. It is pathetic but it is true. And most(70% will be a figure close to reality) of the SC/ST guys of our batch did really bad in their acads. Its even more shamefull to say but one of our proff used to refer these guys as born backloggers which is obviouslly very very demeaning. If the reservation is increased I am ready to bet that these cases will increase substancially.

Moresoever what will these people do when they get a degree. Any employer wont be unfair if he asks the category to which the candidate belongs. A simple solution will be to have quota in the private sector but that will complicate the situation instead of solving it. Why will any firm who is here to get cheap labour will like to waste its dollars if its not entirely confident about its employees. Most of the small companies which are finding it hard to break even will close their offices overnight and return to their native country. The situation will be even worse for the Indian start-ups. I'll shudder to think of a group of 3 people who have an idea and talent but need 3 more guys so that they can get themselves register in the Software Technology Park of India.

Last but not the least I question the intentions of Arjun Singh for bringing this suggestion. He has been in the ministry for 2 years and the Madal files would be (l/d)ying on his table for ever since but why he got the sadbuddhi to bring this controversial suggestion when elections are due in 4 states?? This is such an issue which no party can or will oppose. Their will be voices only to change the format like reservation for muslims, women blah blah blah.....

Enough of the problems, now comes the suggestion: PLAIN AND SIMPLE, NO MORE RESERVATION FOR ANY CASTE, CREED OR RELIGION. IF WE COMPROMISE SLIGHTLY NOW THEN BE REST ASSURED THAT GOVT. WILL BITE US IN COMING YEARS. 22.5 IS WHAT IT IS AND 22.5 IS WHAT SHOULD REMAIN, NOT EVEN 22.51

shame on yahoo

those who use firefox extensively would be familiar with its searching features which really makes browsing fun. this tuesday i foolishly installed yahoo messenger 7 beta version and was shocked to see when that it has eaten up these. any search on url field start redirecting me to yahoo! advanced (?) web search. i treid many things like: uninstalling and reinstalling firefox, uninstalling and reinstalling various versions of YM going to numerous JS files on my comp, deleting yahoo search plugins, visited many online forums (for e.g )and what not. i could get sucess only in accomplishing google search on typing google keywords but couldnt get back i am feeling lucky feature. this is the most blasphemous action by any software firm which i've encountered, leaving M$ guys way behind, i feel robbed.
plz plz plz if anyone can find a solution for this, get back to me. advice for all firefox lover dont install anything from yahoo till you need it desperately.

mangal pandey - the setting

am not blogging anything for a long time, but this movie compelled me to put forth my views

watched the rising last nite, and though i had very low expectations after seening the promos and much too overhyped buildup, it cud barely meet those expections (the unexpected delight was the banjarans songe :) )
the film started off brilliantly with the painting coming into life scene which probably is the best starting scene i've seen since 2001 a space odyssey but it remained only exceptional scene of the entire movie. there was far too many underdeveloped characters of no or little use, the dialoges were uninspiring, the music just about average, the direction ordinary..only saviours were amir khan and toby stephens..but the nail in the coffin was the skin show (am seriously appalled how censor board gave it a U, FYI in UK one need to be atleast 12 to watch this) the pointless act of the maid exposing her areola for feeding the baby, the ever so low cleavage of the whores (which dint have any significance in the story) and worst of all the "zulmi manbasiya" song which will put most of the music videos to shame...it doesnt only show that they had hardly any story worth telling, apart from the last half an hour but it also signifies that amir even though how much he pretend himself to be hasnt got the courage to pull a Rs 50 crore movie entirely on his shoulder. the buildup was like that its the greatest movie ever made (even though the greatest movie ever made wont deserve such a hype) while it wasnt even the best movie released this mansoon. agreed that amir didnt do a film for 4 years but that doesnt give him the certificate of doing any crap and pretending to be the biggest intellectual in the industry.

my rating 2*'s out of 4, but guys do watch it for the for the banjaran's song :D

the longest mail...

Hi,

First of all thanks a lot for providing me something
to do on a boring morning :)

secondly if u bother replying this mail, send it to
apoorvag@gmail.com, yahoo sux and so does orkut, isnt
allowing me to change my primary id :((

thirdly if there is a factual mistake please forgive
me coz i hv seen the movie only twice and the last
viewing was some 16-17 months back

now coming to the discussion, requiem.. is definetly
among the most powerful movie i've seen if not the
most powerful and believe me i hv seen enough movies
to trust that its one of the most powerful one ever
made. my first viewing was when i hadnt become an avid
movie fan and this flick one of the reasons i became a
buff. each frame of the movie is amazing, be it the
scene when the guy is taking away the tv to sell and
old ladies are having their skin tanned, be it the
mother's thoughts of getting in to red dress and
appearing in the tv show, be it the final sequence
when the girl has joined porn industry (wait a minute
have u seen the uncut version???), all in all i can
say that its many brilliant sequence..
the cinematography is amazing, the split screen
sequences, the protrayal of the procedure of taking
drugs (opening of bottle, injecting etc..)
the OST is great, cant remember any thing in recent
past to have such a good score(LOTR trilogy will be
distnat second)
the acting is superb, especially Ellen Burstyn as the
old lady, each expression on her face is so good,
Jennifer Connelly is great as well, she really
displayed great courage in doing such a flick
especially the last sequence, cant think of many
hollywood actresses to get ready for that...
what to say of direction at the age of 30 Darren
Aronofsky has acheived what most of the directors will
never be able to (watch pi, his first and only other
movie, not so shocking but really good)
but above all arguments are invalid if u take away the
screenplay, such a grim display, no hope left
watsoever remaining... if i have never turned to
drugs(i've got many offers) probably this is the
reason....

i agree that the movie leaves one wiht nausea but then
its a successful movie, you loved it in a sense, why
hate it?

enough of adulation, winding it up, but before that
would only like to tell that i am a 'subscriber' (nice
command on english you have, especially when it comes
to picking words, i m so bad at it :(( ) to all kinds
of movies and i believe that not only hollywood, any
country's flicks coming to india is good.

bye for now, hoping its not good bye,
apoorva

time to kill.....

some interesting sites i came across recently:
think clear
don't click
MFC controls
tarot

the omnipresents

this weekend i saw documentries from round the globe (find more about the films here). i m not going to talk about the documentries apart from saying that they were good. though some of the flicks were disturbing but what i was appalled by were the peresence of coke and/or pepsi everywhere. be it pakistan, mozambique, ivory coast or argentina these bevreges were everywhere and not only they are prevalant they are so widely spread that its difficult to shoot a scene on street and avoid their ads. i had a discussion with my friend last night and he said that which ever village in india has electricity has got coke/pepsi and many of those who havent got electricity have also got cola and all this in span of 12-13 years. wonder if anything can be that fast.....

not so happy coincidence

date : June 3, 2005
time : 09:15 hrs IST
place: 1st Main, Lower Palace Orchards, Bangalore

as soon as i put my first foot out of the house i sneezed, a though flashed in my mind what will happen today (as sneezing is not considered auspicious in hinduism, not so sure abt other culture but feel that they arent too differnet). started walking, about 40 seconds later saw a black activa and a silver santro colliding at 90 degrees(refer to the figure). i was hardly 10 metres away from the point. both were in good speed the way the girl flew after collision was really heart wrenching. though she didnt get any visible injuries i think she would have been very very lucky if there werent any broken bones.

though you might have seen deadlier accidents (i cant recall offhand of any) but it provides a shiver down my spine whenever i think of it. also the ugly coincidence of accident following sneeze would remain in my mind for a long time. i know its highlt unscintific to think of omens, but this memory will take ages to fade away........

Hi Saket,

Is it your own Crazy Ball, or are you acting as agent? If that is the case, I would like to urge all fellow Infoscions to not go in for it. BB is for our benefit, and we will not pay brokerage for Crazy Balls.

Guys...

It is a good ball, it has served me faithfully.
It's a ball which only I and good friends and Vaibhav have used in the past.
Do not believe allegations of people who are trying to buy the ball themselves at cheap price.

Do I hear Rs. 6/- anyone??

The ball has been multi handedly used....I have used it many a times myself..
Also the number of bounces is a lie...it must something around a lac by now...

And as for the price....asking is too high..
Not worth more than Rs.1.25
